We Help Small Business Owners & Entrepreneurs Go From Merely Surviving Operations,
to Truly Growing and Thriving Organizations

You want to start a business, but have no idea where to begin.

Here are at William Ballard Business Coaching we've identified four main phases of business development -- from just starting out, to scaling and expanding. As you grow from one phase to the next your focus begins to shift, and we're here to help you navigate through each new challenge every step of the way.

Regardless of where you fall in your business growth journey, we design your business coaching package to ensure you're focused on the right initiatives at the right time, in order to ensure we are providing the greatest value to you and your business right out of the gate.

Within our four business growth phases, we have six playbooks (or SOPs as we like to call them) we follow to ensure your success, increase your confidence, and improve your competency levels within each business stage.

Phase One: strategic business planning

Before You Commit to Any Venture, You Should Study it Fully

In this phase, you'll discover how to research different types of businesses from a variety of different resources, examine the four main types of business entities that are in operation today, and how to insert your personal style into the business you are wanting to create.

You'll learn about market research, which can tell you exactly who is most likely to buy your product or service and why. Finally, we'll  cover the most important elements of your business plan.

In short, you'll learn how research, preparation, and careful consideration of your goals and values can help your business grow in a way that brings satisfaction and fulfillment to your life. At the end of this phase you'll have a written strategic business plan ready to present to investors for possible funding.

Here is a little of what we'll cover during this phase:
  • The nuts and bolts of market research: discover and assess your target market; determine the problem your company will solve in the marketplace, and how you'll solve it (products and/or services); and determine your market position (your value and unique selling proposition)
  • How to go from idea to monetization: discover the 3 stages of business conception
  • Develop guiding principles: cast a vision & mission based on 3 economic priorities; identify key characteristics (values) for every team member to embrace; and determine key critical actions that can be done every day to unify your team & solidify your organization's culture
  •  How to set realistic and achievable goals and objectives that are determined by organizational priorities
  • The plan within the plan: the 4 Ps of marketing and the marketing mix
  • How to express your ideas in financial terms: determine your startup cost and overall financials
  •  Analyze the five basic elements of a business plan; and write out your strategic business plan

Phase two: Business Execution

Planning Requires Patience, Execution Requires Courage

It's been said, "a failure to plan is a plan to fail", but even worse than failing to plan is to plan, but fail to ever execute the plan. Planning without execution is nothing but a waste of time.

That said, during this phase, you'll learn about the various elements of your business structure, such as the type of business entity you'll form, the location of your business, the management style you'll use, the staffing decisions you'll make, and the daily processes you and your staff will go through to get the job done.

You'll also explore some of the types and sources of potential funding for your new venture, such as banks, venture capitalist, potential equity partners, angel investors, and other sources you may turn to for financial assistance. Finally, you'll learn about legal requirements you may encounter when setting up your new venture and the resources that can help guide you through the process.

Here is a little of what we'll go over during this phase:
  • Describe the relationship between a business plan and its process
  • Choose your business location (and how you will do business online)
  • Choose a business structure and decide on a name
  • Register your business (get federal and state tax ID numbers)
  • Apply for licenses and permits (if needed)
  • Open business bank accounts
  • Get business insurance (if needed)
  • Distinguish between different types of funding & determine which would be best for you

Phase three: Business Management

Everything Rises and Falls on Leadership

During this phase, we learn how to manage our day-to-day operations, in order to prepare for success. We'll cover different management and leadership styles and processes, methods of promoting your business while explaining the difference between sales and marketing, and cover the principles involved with money management.

Even though you may choose to use a financial expert, such as an accountant, a CPA, or an attorney to prepare or review your financials, it's essential for you to understand the basics for yourself, so you can make use of the data as your business grows. That said, solid management decisions are made on the foundations of data, and not on the sandy shores of emotion.

Here is a little of what we'll go over during this phase:
  • Explain management process
  • Discuss different management and leadership styles
  • Learn how to make sound financial projections and decisions
  • Complete pro forma financial statements for your business plan
  • Discover how to hire and manage employees, independent contractors, as well as volunteers
  • Stay legally compliant
  • Identify assets and liabilities
  • Prepare for emergencies -- as well as for growth (more about that in phase four)
  • How to manage specific departments and teams
  • Discover the kind of marketing that works
  • How to manage marketing and sales training for team members and volunteers

Phase four: Business Development

There's a Season to Sow, And Then There's a Season to Grow

When it's harvest time it's time for growth and expansion. However, preparing for growth is no easy feat. This is where we'll cover all of your bases and get you headed in the right direction. It's good to start and operate local while also preparing for growth and expansion at the same time. It's operating with the BIG picture always in mind.

Once you've learned how to be successful in your local market you've gained incredible experience, but I'm sure you've heard the saying, "The moment you stop learning is the moment you stop growing." Well, the same can be said about your business.

Momentum is a entrepreneur's best friend. However, the moment you stop reaching out and expanding is the moment your venture ceases to flourish. In other words, staying where you're at and not expanding causes more harm than good in the long run. Your past successes becomes your futures failures.

Here is a little of what we'll cover during this phase:
  • Capitalizing on new markets and expanding to new locations
  • Becoming a federal contractor
  • Expand marketing outreach initiatives
  • Planning for growth and seizing new opportunities
  • Re-evaluate marketing cost and overall financials
